Plan 9 from Bell Labs

Operating System

Plan 9 from Bell Labs is a research operating system designed in the mid-1980s by the same Computing Science Research Center at Bell Labs that built Unix, under Rob Pike, Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and colleagues. It extends Unix's everything-is-a-file philosophy into a fully distributed, network-transparent design in which every resource, local or remote, is represented and accessed through a per-process namespace of files. Plan 9 has been free and open-source software since 2000, and while it never displaced Unix commercially, several of its ideas, including UTF-8, co-developed for the project, and union directories, were later adopted elsewhere.
