CPL (programming language)

Multi-Paradigm Language

CPL, short for Combined Programming Language, is an early programming language created in 1963 by Christopher Strachey. Early development took place at the University of Cambridge and the University of London. The Programming Language Database describes it as a multi-paradigm language developed in the early 1960s and as an early ancestor of the C language by way of BCPL and B, which makes it the first step in a line of languages that leads to one of the most widely used systems languages in computing. Its related languages include ALGOL 60, BCPL, POP-2, B and C. Its example code on the page uses a "value of" form and section signs to bracket blocks, a notation unlike most languages that followed it.
