Microsoft SQL Server

Database Management System

Microsoft SQL Server is a proprietary relational database management system developed by Microsoft using Structured Query Language. As a database server, its primary function is to store and retrieve data requested by other software applications, which may run on the same computer or across a network. Microsoft markets at least a dozen different editions of SQL Server, aimed at different audiences and workloads ranging from small single-machine applications to large Internet-facing applications with many concurrent users.

FAQs

Did Microsoft write SQL Server from scratch?

It began in 1989 as a port of Sybase SQL Server to OS/2.

No. SQL Server began as a project to port Sybase SQL Server onto the OS/2 operating system in 1989, carried out by Sybase, Ashton-Tate and Microsoft. The collaboration with Sybase ended with SQL Server 6.0 in 1995, and Sybase went on to develop its own variant independently. SQL Server 2005 finished the complete revision of the old Sybase code into Microsoft code.
