Why is PostgreSQL also called Postgres?
Postgres is the original project name, kept as an alias after the 1996 rename to PostgreSQL.
The project was originally named POSTGRES, because it began at the University of California, Berkeley as a successor to the Ingres database. In 1996 it was renamed PostgreSQL to reflect its support for SQL. After a review in 2007, the development team decided to keep the name PostgreSQL and the alias Postgres, so both names are in official use.
