AmigaOS is a family of proprietary native operating systems of the Amiga and AmigaOne personal computers. It was developed first by Commodore International and introduced with the launch of the first Amiga, the Amiga 1000, in 1985. Early versions required the Motorola 68000 series of 16-bit and 32-bit microprocessors, while later versions, developed after Commodore's demise by Haage & Partner and then Hyperion Entertainment, required a PowerPC microprocessor.

Why did the first Amiga load AmigaOS from a floppy disk?
The system software still had a few bugs when the Amiga 1000 shipped in 1985, so it was not put in ROM.
The Amiga 1000, launched in 1985, did not keep its operating system in ROM. The Centre for Computing History says the system software still carried a few bugs at that stage, so it was loaded from the Kickstart floppy disk at power-on into a separate 256 KB board of writable memory. Once loaded it did not need to be loaded again, because that memory was then write protected.
