CDC Cyber

Mainframe Family

CDC Cyber is the name for a line of mainframe class computers built by Control Data Corporation that were the company's primary products through the 1970s and 1980s, spanning five related series including the 70/170, 200 and 180 series along with the Cyberplus and Cyber 18 and 1000 systems. Like their predecessor the CDC 6600, the Cyber machines used an unusual one's complement binary representation, and they were widely deployed for scientific and mathematical computing, including fluid flow modeling, material stress analysis, electrochemical machining analysis, radiation shielding modeling and academic research computing. The Cyber 205's architecture was carried forward into the ETA10 after its design engineers left Control Data in 1983 to found ETA Systems, extending the Cyber line's technical influence beyond the company that built it.
