The CP System III, also called Capcom Play System 3 or CPS-3, is an arcade system board that succeeded Capcom's CP System and CP System II hardware. It was first used in 1996 with the game Red Earth and was the last proprietary system board Capcom made before moving to the Dreamcast-based Naomi platform. New games appeared until mid 1999, and technical support ended on February 28, 2019. As with its forerunners, games can be exchanged without changing the core hardware, but the CP System III stores games on CDs instead of separate daughterboards. The CD is loaded into the system memory, and because games are encrypted, each one needs its own security cartridge to decrypt the contents in memory at run time.
