FTOS, short for Force10 Operating System, is a discontinued firmware family that ran on Force10 Ethernet switches and offers functionality similar to Cisco NX-OS and Juniper Junos. Force10 wrote its own hardware abstraction layer, so the same firmware could run on switches built around Broadcom Trident+ chips and on the company's own ASICs, and the command-line interface is based on NetBSD. FTOS is modular, with separate processes running independently so that one failure has limited effect on the others. It supports the common Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocols, including Spanning Tree, VLANs, OSPF, IS-IS and BGP version 4, and is configured through a command-line interface rather than a web interface. When Dell took over the product line, FTOS was renamed Dell Networking Operating System, which has its own entry in this atlas.
