FUJIC was the first electronic digital computer in operation in Japan, finished in March 1956 after a project effectively begun in 1949, and built almost entirely by Dr. Okazaki Bunji. Originally designed to perform lens-design calculations for the Fuji photographic company, its goal was a speed 1,000 times that of human calculation for the same work, and the machine ultimately achieved double that target.
