IS-DOS

Operating System

IS-DOS is a disk operating system developed for Soviet and Russian ZX Spectrum clone computers. It was created in 1990 or 1991 by Iskra Soft in Leningrad, Soviet Union, now Saint Petersburg, Russia, as a closed-source, proprietary system with a monolithic kernel. IS-DOS supports floppy disks in double-sided, double-density format, hard disk drives, and CD-ROMs, with a maximum partition size of 16 mebibytes. Unlike the earlier TR-DOS, IS-DOS resides in random access memory, which reduces the memory available to user programs. It was influenced by TR-DOS and, as of its documented sources, remains a current rather than discontinued system for ZX Spectrum clone hardware.

FAQs

How does iS-DOS differ from TR-DOS?

iS-DOS stays resident in RAM, which leaves less memory for user programs than TR-DOS does.

Unlike TR-DOS, iS-DOS is resident in random-access memory, so it reduces the amount of memory available for user programs. iS-DOS was developed in 1990 or 1991 by Iskra Soft in Leningrad for Soviet and Russian ZX Spectrum clones. Later versions include iS-DOS Chic, developed for the Nemo KAY to give user programs more memory, and TASiS, a modern version from 2006 by NedoPC for the ATM Turbo 2+.
