Why was VAX/VMS renamed OpenVMS?
DEC wanted to signal open standards support and drop the VAX name.
In July 1992, DEC renamed VAX/VMS to OpenVMS as an indication of its support of open systems industry standards such as POSIX and Unix compatibility. The new name also dropped the VAX connection, since a migration to a different architecture was underway.
