CockroachDB is a source-available distributed SQL database management system developed by Cockroach Labs. Its relational functionality is built on a distributed, transactional key-value store designed to withstand infrastructure failures, and it maintains wire compatibility with PostgreSQL. A CockroachDB cluster can span multiple nodes across different failure domains such as data centers or cloud regions and can scale horizontally and vertically across bare metal, VMs, containers, Kubernetes, and cloud environments; the database takes its name from cockroaches for their renowned resilience in surviving disasters.

Is CockroachDB open source?

It is source-available. A 2019 license change moved it away from Apache License 2.0.

Not any more in the strict sense. CockroachDB was released under the Apache License 2.0, a free software license. In June 2019 Cockroach Labs announced a change to its source-available Business Source License, which forbids offering a commercial version of CockroachDB as a service without buying a license, while it remains free of charge for community use. That is why it is described today as source-available rather than open source.
