Contiki is an operating system for networked, memory-constrained systems, built with a particular focus on low-power wireless Internet of Things devices. Adam Dunkels created it in 2002 and released it publicly on March 10, 2003, and a worldwide team of contributors from companies including Texas Instruments, Atmel and Cisco has continued its development since. It runs on severely resource-constrained hardware, often with only kilobytes of memory, milliwatt power budgets and megahertz level processing speed, and needs roughly 10 kilobytes of RAM and 30 kilobytes of ROM for a basic system, or about 30 kilobytes of RAM for a full system with a graphical interface. Contiki includes a built-in TCP/IP stack supporting both IPv4 and IPv6, combines lightweight preemptive scheduling with an event-driven kernel, and supports multitasking and inter-process communication through message passing; it is released as open source software under the BSD-3-Clause license. Is there a newer project that grew out of Contiki?
Yes. Contiki-NG started as a fork of Contiki and keeps some of its original features.
Yes. Contiki-NG started as a fork of the Contiki OS and retains some of its original features. It is a separate project with its own repository, aimed at the same kind of small, low-power Internet of Things devices that Contiki was built for.
