Edos

Operating System

Edos, short for Extended (or Enhanced) Disk Operating System, is a discontinued operating system based on IBM's mainframe DOS/360. It was developed starting in 1972 by The Computer Software Company, known as TCSC, as an enhanced alternative for IBM System/360 and System/370 users who did not want to move to IBM's newer DOS/VS after IBM announced that DOS Release 26 would be the last DOS/360 release it supported. TCSC's Edos expanded the partition capacity of the original DOS/360 and incorporated features that had previously required separate IBM add-ons. Edos was later purchased by the West German computer company Nixdorf, which renamed it NIDOS, for Nixdorf Disk Operating System, and continued it under that name.

FAQs

Why did a company build Edos when IBM already offered DOS/VS?

It gave System/360 users an extended DOS/360 so they did not have to move to IBM's newer DOS/VS.

IBM announced its System/370 line in 1970, along with DOS/VS, which supplanted the DOS/360 line. Many users had large investments in System/360 machines and were nervous about that move. Rather than emulate the 370 on the 360, The Computer Software Company (TCSC) extended the existing DOS. Starting in 1972 it developed Edos, which raised the number of fixed program partitions from 3 to 6, added support for new hardware, and included features that IBM had offered separately. The first version appeared in 1972, after IBM announced that DOS Release 26 was the last DOS release to be supported on the System/360.
