TENEX (operating system)

Operating System

TENEX was an operating system BBN Technologies built in 1969 for the PDP-10 mainframe, and it later formed the basis of Digital Equipment Corporation's TOPS-20. It introduced a full virtual memory system that gave every program its own 18-bit, 262,144-word address space, managed by a pager that BBN built specialized hardware to support. Its command line environment favored long, descriptive commands, such as spelling out a directory listing rather than Unix's terse ls, and it offered automatic command completion by pressing escape as well as a help system triggered by typing a question mark. TENEX was popular on the PDP-10 market, and its successor TOPS-20, nicknamed TWENEX, stayed influential into the early 1980s before users largely moved to Unix and VAX/VMS. FAQs

How did TENEX become TOPS-20 and where did the name TWENEX come from?

DEC bought TENEX from BBN and sold it as TOPS-20, which hackers nicknamed TWENEX, short for twenty TENEX.

Digital Equipment Corporation bought the rights to TENEX from Bolt, Beranek and Newman and began work to make it its own system. The company marketed the result as TOPS-20. The hacker community, mindful of its origins, nicknamed it TWENEX, a contraction of "twenty TENEX", even though very little of the original TENEX code remained by then.

How widely was TENEX used on the early ARPANET?

By the early 1970s almost all ARPANET systems ran TENEX.

According to the Free On-line Dictionary of Computing, by the early 1970s almost all of the systems on the ARPANET ran TENEX. That made it the common operating system of the network's host machines in its early years.
