Version 7 Unix

Operating System

Version 7 Unix, also called Seventh Edition Unix or simply V7, was an important early release of the Unix operating system, released in 1979 as the last Bell Laboratories release to see widespread distribution before AT&T Corporation began commercializing Unix in the early 1980s. It was originally developed for the PDP-11 minicomputers made by Digital Equipment Corporation and was later ported to other computing platforms. FAQs

Why is Version 7 Unix remembered as a portability milestone?

It was the first readily portable version of Unix.

Version 7 Unix was the first readily portable version of Unix. Because minicomputers had many different architectures and the market for 16-bit microprocessors was just beginning, many ports were completed within a few years of its 1979 release. The first Sun workstations ran a V7 port by UniSoft, and the first version of Microsoft Xenix for the Intel 8086 was derived from it.

Can Version 7 Unix still be run today?

Yes; bootable images run on PDP-11 emulators such as SIMH.

Yes. Caldera International released V7 as free and open source software in 2002 under a permissive BSD-like license, and bootable images can still be downloaded. They can be run on modern hosts using PDP-11 emulators such as SIMH.
