UNIVAC 1100/2200 series

Mainframe Family

The UNIVAC 1100/2200 series is a family of compatible 36 bit computer systems that began with the UNIVAC 1107, introduced by Sperry Rand in 1962 as a solid state successor to earlier vacuum tube UNIVAC machines. The line used fixed point and floating point arithmetic and the FIELDATA and later ASCII character encodings, moved from core to semiconductor memory in 1975, and grew through models including the 1108, of which 296 processors were built against an internal projection of only 43, and the 1106, of which 338 were produced. Sperry dropped the UNIVAC brand name in 1983 and merged with Burroughs in 1986 to form Unisys, which still supports the architecture today as the ClearPath Dorado series, giving the original 1962 design an operating lineage of more than sixty years.
