ScyllaDB

Database Management System

ScyllaDB is a source-available distributed NoSQL wide-column data store designed to be compatible with Apache Cassandra while achieving significantly higher throughputs and lower latencies. It supports the same protocols as Cassandra (CQL) and the same file formats (SSTable), but is a completely rewritten implementation using the C++20 language replacing Cassandra's Java, and the Seastar asynchronous programming library. In addition to implementing Cassandra's protocols, ScyllaDB also implements the Amazon DynamoDB API.

FAQs

Can an Apache Cassandra application move to ScyllaDB without being rewritten?

Mostly yes. ScyllaDB documents itself as a drop-in replacement for Apache Cassandra 3.11.

Largely yes, according to ScyllaDB's own documentation. It describes ScyllaDB as a drop-in replacement for Apache Cassandra 3.11, with additional features from Apache Cassandra 4.0. Its compatibility tables list the Cassandra Query Language as fully compatible with version 3.3.1, plus additional features from later versions. One interface is not carried over: the older Thrift interface is no longer supported as of ScyllaDB 6.0, and it was dropped from Apache Cassandra in version 4.0.

ScyllaDB was designed to be protocol- and file-format-compatible with Apache Cassandra (same CQL protocol and SSTable format) while being an entirely separate C++ reimplementation built for higher throughput and lower latency.
