Bcrypt is a password hashing function designed by Niels Provos and David Maziere and presented at USENIX in 1999. It is based on the Blowfish cipher and incorporates a salt to protect against rainbow table attacks. Bcrypt is also an adaptive function, meaning its iteration count can be increased over time to make it slower and keep it resistant to brute force attack as computing power grows.
