BLAKE2 is a cryptographic hash function, announced in 2012, based on the BLAKE hash function, which is itself built on Daniel J. Bernstein's ChaCha stream cipher, with a permuted copy of the input block, XORed with round constants, added before each ChaCha round. The BLAKE family repeatedly combines an eight-word hash value with sixteen message words, truncating the ChaCha-style result to obtain the next hash value, and comes in variants using 32-bit or 64-bit words to produce different digest sizes. The later BLAKE3 hash function, based on BLAKE2, was announced in 2020.
