Ed25519 is a specific instance of EdDSA, the Edwards-curve Digital Signature Algorithm, using SHA-512 as its hash function and an elliptic curve related to Curve25519. EdDSA was published in 2011 by a team including Daniel J. Bernstein, Niels Duif, Tanja Lange, Peter Schwabe and Bo-Yin Yang, who designed it to be faster than existing digital signature schemes without giving up security, targeting a 128-bit security level comparable to strong symmetric ciphers. Ed25519 public keys are 256 bits and its signatures are 512 bits, making them considerably more compact than an RSA key or signature offering equivalent security.
