Random sample consensus, or RANSAC, is an iterative method for estimating the parameters of a mathematical model from observed data that contains outliers, and can also be understood as an outlier detection method. It is non-deterministic, producing a correct result only with a certain probability that rises as more iterations are allowed, and it was first published by Fischler and Bolles at SRI International in 1981 to solve the location determination problem of finding points in space that project onto a known set of image landmarks.

It is a non-deterministic algorithm in the sense that it produces a reasonable result only with a certain probability, with this probability increasing as more iterations are allowed.
