RC4, also known as ARC4 or ARCFOUR, is a stream cipher designed by Ron Rivest in 1987 and kept as a trade secret until its algorithm leaked onto the internet in 1994. It is notable for its simplicity and speed in software, but multiple vulnerabilities have since been discovered, rendering it insecure, particularly when the beginning of its output keystream is not discarded or when nonrandom or related keys are used.
