Serpent Algorithm

Cryptographic Algorithm

Serpent is a symmetric key block cipher designed by Ross Anderson, Eli Biham and Lars Knudsen as an entry in the competition to select the Advanced Encryption Standard, where it was a finalist and ranked second to the cipher eventually chosen, Rijndael. It was designed with a deliberately conservative security margin, using more rounds than many competing designs in order to trade some raw speed for a larger safety margin against future cryptanalysis.

Serpent was one of the five finalists in the AES competition (narrowed from fifteen candidates in August 1999); Rijndael, represented here as the AES Algorithm entity, was the eventual winner.
