SHA-1 is a cryptographic hash function that takes an input message of any length and produces a 160 bit digest, processing the message in 512 bit blocks through a compression function built from bitwise operations, modular addition and left rotations across eighty rounds. It was designed by the United States National Security Agency and published by NIST in 1995 as part of the Secure Hash Algorithm family. Researchers demonstrated practical collision attacks against SHA-1 in 2017, and it has since been deprecated for security-sensitive use in favor of SHA-256 and other members of the SHA-2 and SHA-3 families.
