SHA-256 is a member of the SHA-2 family of cryptographic hash functions, designed by the United States National Security Agency and first published in 2001. It produces a 256-bit hash value from an input message of any length, and was subsequently published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology as the federal standard FIPS PUB 180-2.
