SHA-3 is the newest member of the Secure Hash Algorithm family of standards, released by the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology on August 5, 2015. Although grouped with the earlier standards, SHA-3 is built on an internally different design from the structure shared by SHA-1 and SHA-2, based on the Keccak sponge construction rather than the earlier compression-function style those standards use.
