Simon is a family of lightweight block ciphers publicly released by the National Security Agency in June 2013, optimized for performance in hardware implementations, with its sister algorithm Speck optimized instead for software. The NSA began work on the Simon and Speck ciphers in 2011, anticipating that agencies across the United States federal government would need a cipher able to run well across a diverse collection of Internet of Things devices while maintaining an acceptable level of security.
