SM4, formerly known as SMS4, is a block cipher standardised for commercial cryptography in China, used in the Chinese national standard for wireless LAN security WAPI and with Transport Layer Security. It was proposed for the IEEE 802.11i standard but rejected, published as GM/T 0002 in 2012 and as ISO/IEC 18033-3 Amendment 1 in 2021, drafted mainly by Lu Shuwang of the Data Assurance and Communication Security Center at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and declassified in January 2006 before becoming the national standard GB/T 32907-2016 in August 2016.
