Simon Algorithm

Cryptographic Algorithm

Simon is a family of lightweight block ciphers publicly released by the National Security Agency in June 2013, optimized for performance in hardware implementations, with its sister algorithm Speck optimized instead for software. The NSA began work on the Simon and Speck ciphers in 2011, anticipating that agencies across the United States federal government would need a cipher able to run well across a diverse collection of Internet of Things devices while maintaining an acceptable level of security.

Sister NSA lightweight block ciphers, both publicly released in June 2013: Simon optimized for hardware implementations, Speck for software. Verified en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speck_(cipher): "Speck is part of a family of lightweight block ciphers publicly released by the National Security Agency (NSA) in June 2013. Speck has been optimized for performance in software implementations, while its sister algorithm, Simon, has been optimized for hardware implementations."

  • In Group: Discrete Logarithm and Hidden Subgroup Algorithms, Introduction
The quantum algorithm solving Simon's problem, usually called Simon's algorithm, served as the inspiration for Shor's algorithm.
  • In Field: Quantum Computing, Lead sentence
Simon's problem is a computational problem that is proven to be solved exponentially faster on a quantum computer than on a classical (that is, traditional) computer.
