Database Management System

MySQL is a free and open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). Its name combines My, after co-founder Michael Widenius's daughter, and SQL, the acronym for Structured Query Language. It organizes data into structured tables with relationships between them, letting users store, retrieve, and manage data and control access permissions through SQL commands. MySQL also coordinates with the host operating system to handle storage, multiple users, remote connections, and data verification and backup.

What is the relationship between MySQL and MariaDB?

MariaDB is a fork of MySQL, started by MySQL co-founder Michael Widenius when Oracle announced its purchase of Sun Microsystems.

MariaDB is a fork of MySQL. MySQL was owned by the Swedish company MySQL AB, which Sun Microsystems bought in January 2008 for $1 billion, and Oracle then moved to acquire Sun. The day Oracle announced the purchase of Sun, MySQL co-founder Michael Widenius forked MySQL and launched MariaDB. MariaDB is based on the same code base as MySQL server 5.5 and aims to keep compatibility with the versions Oracle provides.
