MySQL is a free and open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). Its name combines My, after co-founder Michael Widenius's daughter, and SQL, the acronym for Structured Query Language. It organizes data into structured tables with relationships between them, letting users store, retrieve, and manage data and control access permissions through SQL commands. MySQL also coordinates with the host operating system to handle storage, multiple users, remote connections, and data verification and backup.
