Blockchain Consensus Mechanisms

Rules by which the participants in a distributed ledger agree on which new records to accept without trusting any one of them. Proof of work makes a participant spend computing effort to earn the right to add a block, which is the approach used by Bitcoin, while proof of authority gives that right to approved validators whose identity is staked. They differ in energy use, speed and the kind of trust they require.
