J is an array programming language developed in the late 1980s by Kenneth E. Iverson, the creator of APL, together with Roger Hui, as a successor intended to address the reliance of APL on a non-standard symbol set. J uses only the standard ASCII character set, relying on digraphs of ordinary keyboard characters in place of the special symbols of APL, while preserving and extending the core ideas of concise, array-oriented, function-level programming that APL established.
