Procedural Language

PL/pgSQL, short for Procedural Language/PostgreSQL, is a procedural programming language supported by the PostgreSQL object-relational database management system. It closely resembles the PL/SQL language of Oracle. It was implemented by Jan Wieck and first appeared with PostgreSQL 6.4, released on October 30, 1998. The Programming Language Database credits Jan Wieck, dates the language to 1998, records its development within the PostgreSQL Global Development Group, and relates it to PL/SQL, Ada, SQL, SQL/PSM and the Bison parser generator. GitHub and Pygments support syntax highlighting for it, and tens of thousands of public repositories contain code written in it, which shows how widely database-side stored procedures are used.
