DataFlex

DataFlex is an object oriented, high level programming language and fourth generation visual development tool designed for building Windows, web and mobile business applications. It was created beginning in 1982 by Data Access Corporation, a company founded in 1976, and the language is now developed and distributed by Data Access Worldwide, which maintains offices in Miami, Florida, Hengelo in the Netherlands, and Sao Paulo, Brazil. DataFlex supports object oriented, structured and imperative programming styles, and its programs compile to an intermediate bytecode that runs across multiple operating systems, giving developers a degree of cross platform portability uncommon among business application languages of its era. A central feature of DataFlex is its built in support for multiple relational database backends, including Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL and PostgreSQL, without requiring application code to change when a deployment switches from one supported database engine to another. DataFlex remains commercial, proprietary software, actively maintained with version 25.0 released on June 11, 2025, and it continues to be used chiefly by long established business software vendors and in-house development teams building and maintaining line of business applications originally built on earlier DataFlex versions.
