Gambas

Object-Oriented Language

Gambas is an object-oriented dialect of the BASIC programming language, offered together with an integrated development environment of the same name. It is designed to run on Linux and other Unix-like operating systems, and it is an open source project. The name is a recursive acronym, Gambas Almost Means Basic, and it is also the Spanish, French and Portuguese word for prawns, which is where the project logos come from. The Programming Language Database dates the language to 1999 and credits it to Benoît Minisini, and lists a read-eval-print loop among its features. For computing readers it is a useful example of a modern BASIC dialect that keeps the beginner-friendly feel of the older family while adding objects and a graphical development environment on free operating systems.
