GW-BASIC

Procedural Language

GW-BASIC is a dialect of the BASIC programming language developed by Microsoft from BASICA, originally for Compaq. It is otherwise identical to Microsoft and IBM BASICA, but it is a fully self-contained executable and does not need the ROM BASIC that BASICA relied on. It was bundled with MS-DOS operating systems on IBM PC compatibles by Microsoft. The Programming Language Database dates it to 1983, names Microsoft as the place of its early development, and lists IBM BASICA, QBasic, MSX BASIC, QuickBASIC, MBASIC and Dartmouth BASIC among its related languages.
