INTERCAL (Compiler Language With No Pronounceable Acronym) is an esoteric programming language created in 1972 by Don Woods and James M. Lyon as a parody, intended to poke fun at the various shortcomings of other contemporary programming languages, and it has been described as deliberately unlike any other programming language before or since. INTERCAL requires programmers to use commands such as PLEASE, and is generally considered the first esoteric programming language.
