Zig is a general-purpose systems programming language, described by its own creator as a general-purpose improvement on the C programming language. It was designed by Andrew Kelley and first appeared on February 8, 2016, after Kelley grew frustrated with other languages while developing audio workstation software, finding Go C interoperability difficult, Rust rules overly restrictive and C++ prone to memory corruption bugs. Zig is multi-paradigm, covering imperative, concurrent, procedural and functional styles, with a static, strong, inferred, nominal and generic typing discipline. It favors manual memory management with no macros or preprocessor, supports compile-time generic data types and low-level features such as packed structs and arbitrary-width integers, offers direct interoperability with C, and treats cross-compilation as a first-class feature. Development is funded by the Zig Software Foundation through corporate sponsorships and personal donations. How does Zig avoid hidden behavior in code?
Zig has no hidden control flow or memory allocations, and no preprocessor or macros.
The Zig overview states that the language has no hidden control flow, no hidden memory allocations, no preprocessor and no macros. In practice, if Zig code does not look like it is jumping away to call a function, then it is not. This fits the language's manual approach to memory management, where allocation is something the programmer writes out rather than something the language does silently.
