NELIAC (Navy Electronics Laboratory International ALGOL Compiler) is a programming language and self-compiling compiler developed by the US Navy Electronics Laboratory beginning in 1958, an early dialect of ALGOL 58 adapted for military and scientific computing. NELIAC was notable for being one of the earliest compilers written in its own source language, a self-hosting, bootstrapped compiler, and for being ported across a wide range of incompatible naval and military computer architectures during the 1960s, carrying its influence into later structured-programming practice within US defense computing circles.

FAQs
Why did NELIAC describe its compiler in its own language?
It made it easy to produce a compiler on one computer using a compiler on another.
The Naval Electronics Laboratory at San Diego was getting a new Sperry Rand computer, the Countess, with a variety of other computers installed and expected. The designers stressed describing a compiler in its own language to make it easy, among other things, to produce a compiler on one computer using a compiler on another. They also stressed very fast compiling times, at the expense of object code running times, if necessary.
