X10 (programming language)

Concurrent Language

X10 is a statically typed, object-oriented programming language developed by IBM Research beginning in 2004 as part of the DARPA-funded High Productivity Computing Systems program, designed for high-performance parallel computing on large, distributed clusters using a partitioned global address space (PGAS) model. X10 introduces places, representing distinct locations of data and computation across a cluster, along with asynchronous activities and clocks for coordinating parallel work across those places, aiming to make large-scale parallel programming more productive than traditional message-passing approaches such as MPI.

FAQs

What is X10 especially good for?

The X10 project FAQ says: "X10 is especially good at distributing your application over a cluster of distributed memory machines. In particular, with X10, there is a natural migration path from a single-threaded prototype, to a version that uses multiple cores on an SMP, to a distributed memory implementation that runs across a cluster of SMPs."
