S-PLUS was a commercial statistical programming environment sold by TIBCO Software Inc., built as an implementation of the S programming language originally developed at Bell Labs. Introduced by Statistical Sciences, Inc. in 1988, S-PLUS added object-oriented programming facilities on top of S's core language along with a large library of analytical algorithms, and became a standard tool among statisticians and econometricians; its FinMetrics package was built specifically for econometric time series analysis. As the open-source R language, itself descended from S, grew in adoption, TIBCO responded by releasing the TIBCO Enterprise Runtime for R as an alternative R interpreter for Windows and Unix systems. S-PLUS itself was proprietary software, with its last stable release, version 8.2, issued in November 2010.
