TeX

Procedural Language

TeX, stylized within the system as TeX, is a typesetting or formatting system designed and mostly written by Donald Knuth and released in 1978. It was designed together with the Metafont language for font description and the Computer Modern family of typefaces, with two main goals: to let anybody produce high-quality books with minimal effort, and to give exactly the same results on all computers at any point in time. TeX is free software, which made it accessible to a wide range of users. The Programming Language Database lists Pascal, METAFONT, Troff, LaTeX and BibTeX among its related languages and shows a document in plain TeX ending with the bye command.
