GS/OS is an operating system Apple Computer built for its Apple IIGS personal computer, handling file system access, input and output device control, program loading and interrupt management. It launched in 1988 as System 4.0 and reached its last official version, System 6.0.1, in May 1993. GS/OS succeeded ProDOS 16 and, unlike that mostly 8 bit machine code predecessor, was written entirely in 16 bit code for the 65816 processor, giving it noticeably faster loading, disk access and screen updates. It added plug-in device drivers for modems and printers, a progress indicator, AppleShare networking support, File System Translators for reading foreign file formats, Macintosh-style resource forks, and support for storage devices as large as 4 gigabytes.
