Rhapsody was an operating system Apple Computer built after acquiring NeXT in late 1996, representing the fifth major release of the Mach based operating system NeXT had originally developed. Apple announced it on January 7, 1997 at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, shipped a first developer release in October 1997 and a second in May 1998, and designed it to bridge the older Classic Mac OS and the coming Mac OS X: a Blue Box layer let existing Mac OS applications keep running, while a Yellow Box layer gave developers a framework for new software. It ran on a modified Mach 2.5 kernel with a 4.4BSD Unix environment and could run on both PowerPC and Intel x86 hardware. Rhapsody itself never reached consumers, but Apple forked its core into Darwin, the open source system that still underlies Apple's current operating systems.
