DesktopBSD was a desktop oriented operating system built on FreeBSD, aiming to combine FreeBSD's stability with the K Desktop Environment 3's user friendliness, developed by the DesktopBSD Team, whose final official release, version 1.7, came on September 7, 2009, before the project was discontinued in 2015. It tracked FreeBSD's latest stable branch rather than forking it outright, used FreeBSD's own ports and package system for software installation, and supported both amd64 and i386 processors. The project restarted under new leadership in May 2010 after its original developer could no longer maintain it, and a 2013 forum post pointed to further revival efforts, including a September 2015 roadmap describing a planned GNOME 3 based version 2.0 that never shipped.
