OpenSolaris

OpenSolaris is a discontinued open source computer operating system for SPARC and x86 based systems, created by Sun Microsystems and based on Solaris, with development beginning in the mid 2000s and ending in 2010. It was built from several software consolidations open sourced starting with Solaris 10 and descends from the UNIX System V Release 4 code base developed by Sun and AT&T in the late 1980s, making it the only version of the System V variant of UNIX ever released as open source. After Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems in 2010 and discontinued OpenSolaris development in house to focus on the proprietary Oracle Solaris, a group of former OpenSolaris developers forked the core software as OpenIndiana under the newly created illumos Foundation, which continues to maintain the kernel and userland that further illumos distributions, both commercial and non-commercial, are built on today.
