Visualization

Visualization groups the computing pioneers in this atlas whose central, explicitly stated contribution concerns designing graphic or interactive representations of data that help people explore, understand and reason about it. Members range from researchers who built systems and toolkits for interactive data analysis and visual analytics, through those known for graph drawing algorithms that determine how a network diagram is laid out for human readability, to designers of tools that convert hand-drawn sketches into working charts. This is a named subarea of the ACM Computing Classification System Human-Centered Computing area, distinct from the narrower interface-design concerns of Human-Computer Interaction and from the group-oriented concerns of Collaborative and Social Computing: a pioneer belongs here when the cited contribution is specifically about representing data visually rather than about interface interaction or group coordination in general.
