David DeWitt

David J. DeWitt (born July 20, 1948) is a computer scientist specializing in database management system research, known for his work in parallel databases, benchmarking, object oriented databases and XML databases. He was the John P. Morgridge Professor Emeritus of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he started and led the Wisconsin Database Group for more than thirty years, and later a Technical Fellow at Microsoft leading the Microsoft Jim Gray Systems Lab. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1998 for the theory and construction of database systems, is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, and received the ACM SIGMOD Innovations Award in 1995 and the ACM Software System Award in 2009 for his Gamma parallel database system project.
